The Women and Underrepresented Minorities in STEM Booster Act of 2024 establishes a grant program administered by the National Science Foundation to increase participation of women, underrepresented minorities, and people with disabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Eligible organizations can use grant funds for activities such as mentoring programs, internships, online workshops, outreach to K-12 students, and faculty recruitment and retention initiatives. The bill is motivated by data showing significant disparities in STEM education and employment, including that women earn far fewer degrees in computer science and engineering than in other fields, and that women and people of color leave STEM careers at much higher rates than white men. The legislation authorizes $15 million annually for fiscal years 2025 through 2029 to support these grant activities. This bill addresses gaps in both the pipeline into STEM fields and the retention of underrepresented groups already working in these industries.
