The PRO-HEAL Act of 2024 authorizes the Health Resources and Services Administration to award competitive grants to states and colleges to develop or expand programs that train healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, physician assistants, dentists, and emergency medical technicians. Grants would run for up to five years, with twenty-five percent of funding reserved for grants to minority-serving institutions, and priority given to programs serving rural or underserved areas and those recruiting students from within their state. Recipients must report back on how they spent the money, student admission rates, demographics, and dropout rates within five years. The bill authorizes $215 million in funding spread across fiscal years 2025 through 2029, with future grants after that period going preferentially to entities that have already received funding.
