The Fire Grants and Safety Act of 2023 renews federal funding and authority for key fire safety programs administered through the U.S. Fire Administration. It authorizes $95 million per year from 2024 through 2028 for the U.S. Fire Administration, including dedicated funding for firefighter health and safety research. The bill also extends the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program and the Fire Prevention and Safety Grants Program through 2030, with $750 million in annual funding authorized from 2024 to 2028, and similarly extends the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program through 2030 with funding continuing through 2028. These programs primarily benefit local fire departments and emergency responders by helping them purchase equipment, hire staff, and improve training and safety practices. The bill also requires the Government Accountability Office to audit and publicly report, within three years, on obstacles fire departments face in accessing federal funds and on the performance of the U.S. Fire Administration itself.
