The Mass Timber Federal Buildings Act of 2024 directs federal agencies to prioritize using innovative wood products in the construction, renovation, and acquisition of public buildings, including military installations. The law requires that these wood products be sourced from facilities and forests located in the United States and harvested responsibly, with preference given to wood from forest restoration projects, wildfire prevention efforts, and underserved forest owners like tribal and small family operations. The General Services Administration and Department of Defense will be responsible for implementing this contracting preference when entering into construction contracts. Within 180 days of the law's enactment, the General Services Administration must conduct an environmental assessment measuring the climate impact of buildings using mass timber products and submit a report to Congress within an additional 180 days.
