This bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special study of the Cahokia Mounds site and surrounding areas in Illinois and Missouri, once home to a major Mississippian culture city that flourished from roughly 700 to 1400 AD. The study area includes the main Cahokia Mounds site, nearby land in several Illinois and Missouri counties, and related sites such as Mitchell Mound, Sugarloaf Mound, Emerald Mound, and others connected to this ancient civilization. The Interior Department must evaluate whether the area is nationally significant and suitable for designation as a unit of the National Park System, consider alternative ways to preserve and interpret the site, consult with government agencies and outside organizations, and estimate the costs of various preservation options. Within one year of receiving funding for the study, the Secretary must report the findings and recommendations to relevant congressional committees. The study will be paid for using the National Park Service's existing budget rather than new appropriations, and the bill mainly affects residents, local governments, and historical or cultural organizations connected to this landmark, which is already recognized as a National Historic Landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
