The Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act of 2024 strengthens protections for young children living in federally assisted housing by requiring landlords to test for lead-based paint hazards when families with children under age 6 move in or renew leases. The bill applies to housing receiving federal mortgage insurance, rental assistance vouchers, public housing support, or other federal funding exceeding $5,000. Under the legislation, property owners must complete lead risk assessments within 15 days of a lease request or inspection, and if hazards are found, they must remediate them within 30 days with no extensions allowed. Families whose housing units have uncontrolled lead hazards can relocate emergency-style to lead-safe housing without penalties, waitlists, or loss of their rental assistance. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has one year to establish detailed regulations implementing these requirements, and the bill authorizes unspecified funding for fiscal years 2025 through 2029.
