This bill extends employment discrimination protections to workers at the District of Columbia courts and the Public Defender Service by bringing them under the District of Columbia Human Rights Act of 1977. Currently, employees of these two entities are excluded from protections against workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity, family responsibilities, and other protected characteristics. The legislation treats nonjudicial court employees and Public Defender Service staff as covered employees, and treats the courts and Public Defender Service as covered employers under the human rights law. These entities will also follow the same complaint procedures as other District government agencies. The changes take effect immediately upon enactment for any complaints filed after the law passes.
