The Loggers Economic Assistance and Relief Act establishes a federal payment program to help timber harvesting and timber hauling businesses recover from major disasters that cause significant revenue losses. Eligible businesses that experience at least a 10 percent drop in gross revenue during any 30-day period or quarter compared to the same period in the previous year can receive payments equal to 10 percent of their lost revenue, which must be used for operating expenses. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Farm Service Agency and covers losses from federally declared disasters, including insect infestations. The legislation authorizes $50 million in funding annually from 2024 through 2028 and requires the Secretary of Agriculture to report to Congress annually on all payments distributed. The bill was introduced in the Senate in May 2024 and referred to the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry.
