The She DRIVES Act requires the Department of Transportation to update how vehicles are tested for crash safety by including crash test dummies that better represent adult women's body proportions and anatomy. Currently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration primarily uses a male-sized test dummy, which may not adequately reflect how women experience injuries in crashes. The bill mandates that within 180 days, the agency must issue new testing standards that include both a 5th percentile female test dummy and updated male dummy, require testing in both front and rear seating positions, and use the most advanced testing technology available globally. The agency must also review and update these standards at least annually going forward, and if the deadline is missed, must report to Congress every 30 days explaining the delay. This change affects all passenger vehicle manufacturers, as they will need to redesign and retest vehicles to meet the new crashworthiness standards that account for differences in female occupants' bodies and safety needs.
