This bill would permanently terminate the decades-long Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository project in Nevada and require a study on alternative uses for the site. The legislation withdraws the Energy Department's pending application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain and prohibits the government from ever reconsidering the site for this purpose. The bill also directs the Energy Department to begin reclaiming the site and mitigating environmental damage caused by previous characterization work. Within 180 days of enactment, the Office of Management and Budget must submit a study to Congress examining the economic viability and job creation potential of alternative uses for the site, including military facilities like unmanned aircraft command centers, data centers, renewable energy development, and scientific research activities. The legislation was introduced by Nevada senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen.
