This bill would allow parents who borrowed federal student loans on behalf of their children to have those loans forgiven if the student becomes permanently and totally disabled. Currently, parent borrowers remain responsible for repaying these loans even if their child becomes disabled, but this legislation would discharge that obligation. The bill applies to all outstanding parent loans regardless of when they were taken out or when the student's disability began. The measure was introduced in May 2024 by Senators Vance, Coons, and Braun and referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. The bill does not specify additional funding requirements, as loan forgiveness would come from existing federal student loan accounts.
