The legislation establishes that VA compensation or pension payments must resume on the first day after active service concludes, and it allows the VA to automatically restart payments without requiring veterans to file new claims if their records contain sufficient evidence. The bill also directs the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense to develop an improved coordination plan within 180 days to ensure the Defense Department properly notifies the VA when service members complete their active duty so payments can be resumed promptly. This change aims to eliminate delays and confusion that currently leave veterans waiting for their earned benefits after returning from active service.
