This bill designates an existing memorial to the Special Guerilla Unit at Veterans Memorial Park in Middletown, Connecticut as an official National Memorial. The Special Guerilla Unit consisted of approximately 50,000 Hmong soldiers who fought between 1961 and 1975 to support United States military interests and combat Communist expansion in Laos, with about 35,000 members killed in combat. These soldiers conducted numerous rescue missions to recover downed American pilots and many later resettled in the United States with their families. The bill recognizes their contributions and honors their service by giving the memorial a national designation, though it clarifies that the memorial will not become part of the National Park System and will not receive any federal funding for its maintenance or operations. The legislation was introduced in May 2024 by Senator Blumenthal.
