The SUPPORT Rx Act establishes a three-year federal demonstration program that provides grants to states, tribal governments, local health departments, and addiction treatment facilities to create pharmacy-based addiction care programs. These programs would allow pharmacists working under collaborative agreements with physicians to prescribe buprenorphine and provide comprehensive treatment services for opioid and substance use disorders, including withdrawal management, medication maintenance, and overdose reversal services in community pharmacy settings. Grant funds can support staff training, medication supplies, telehealth services, private counseling spaces, and other operational costs needed to deliver low-barrier, same-day addiction treatment at pharmacies. The Department of Health and Human Services must issue guidance within 180 days and submit a final report to Congress within 120 days after the three-year program ends with recommendations for expanding these pharmacy-based models. The program will be funded through existing harm reduction grant programs within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
