The STATUE Act expands federal criminal penalties for destroying or damaging memorials on public property. The bill amends existing law to cover not just veterans' memorials but any structures, plaques, statues, or monuments on public lands or federal property, making such destruction a federal crime when it involves interstate commerce or occurs on federal property. Anyone convicted of violating the law faces mandatory prison time between 5 and 10 years, plus fines of at least $1,000 or the amount of damage caused, whichever is greater. The legislation applies to anyone who willfully injures or destroys these memorials or attempts to do so. The bill was introduced in June 2024 by Senator Tom Cotton and Senator Marsha Blackburn and was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
