The Health Equity Innovation Act of 2024 creates a new grant program to help faith- and community-based organizations address health disparities and chronic diseases in underserved areas. The Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health, would award grants to eligible organizations to pay for medical services, health screenings, preventive care, and to expand access to culturally appropriate healthcare services. The funding would support community health workers, navigators, and peer specialists who help connect people to care and address underlying social factors affecting health. To qualify, organizations must be located in medically underserved communities or health professional shortage areas and must have a track record of addressing chronic health disparities. The bill authorizes funding starting at $50 million in fiscal year 2024 and increasing incrementally to $70 million by fiscal year 2028, with no more than 5 percent of funds used for administrative costs.
