The PFAS Alternatives Act directs the U.S. Fire Administration to establish a grant program supporting research and development of protective turnout gear for firefighters that does not contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which are chemicals linked to health risks including cancer. The bill authorizes $25 million annually from 2024 through 2028 for research grants to nonprofit organizations, universities, and fire service groups to develop and test next-generation PFAS-free gear and materials, with an additional $2 million per year for training programs to teach firefighters proper use and decontamination of the new equipment. Eligible organizations must have experience in firefighter health research, safety education, or cancer prevention and must partner with firefighting industry groups to ensure research results reach practicing firefighters. The Fire Administration must report to Congress within two years on progress toward these goals.
