This bill requires the federal government to establish accessibility standards for fitness equipment and exercise instruction so that people with disabilities can use gyms, fitness centers, and other exercise facilities. The Access Board, a federal agency, must develop guidelines within 18 months that specify how many accessible machines gyms should have, where they should be placed, and what features they need, such as controls for people with limited mobility and audio descriptions for people who are blind or have low vision. The Department of Justice must then issue regulations based on these guidelines requiring fitness providers to offer accessible equipment and ensure at least one trained employee is available during business hours to assist people with disabilities. The law applies to all gyms and fitness centers that serve the public, as well as exercise facilities in hotels, schools, retirement communities, and other institutions. The regulations will account for differences between new and existing facilities and the size of each fitness provider's operation.
