The Fighting Fibers Act of 2024 requires all new washing machines sold in the United States to include microfiber filtration systems beginning January 1, 2030. These filters must have a mesh size of no more than 100 micrometers and capture the tiny textile fibers that washing clothes shed into waterways and the environment. Washing machines must also bear a visible consumer label instructing users to check and empty the filter regularly. The bill affects washing machine manufacturers and is enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency, which can issue civil penalties of up to $10,000 for a first violation and $30,000 for subsequent violations. Additionally, the EPA must conduct a nationwide study within one year to examine microfiber pollution in the human body and environment, including its effects on public health and environmental justice communities.
