The ABLE Awareness Act directs multiple federal agencies to inform people with disabilities about ABLE accounts when they first enroll in various government benefits programs. ABLE accounts, created in 2014, allow individuals with disabilities to save money for qualified expenses without losing eligibility for certain federal benefits, but only about 1.2 percent of the estimated 14 million eligible Americans currently have one. The bill requires the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other agencies to provide information about ABLE accounts to beneficiaries beginning 180 days after the law's enactment. Additionally, the bill authorizes $50 million in grants per year from 2025 through 2029 for states and tribal governments to conduct awareness campaigns about ABLE accounts, with a particular focus on preparing for millions of newly eligible individuals when eligibility rules expand in 2026.
