This bill, the Credit Freeze for Newborns Act, amends federal credit reporting laws to make it easier for parents and guardians to protect their children's credit from identity theft. The legislation requires credit reporting agencies to place security freezes on behalf of minors under age 16 within one business day for electronic requests or three business days for mail requests, all at no cost. It also requires the Social Security Administration to provide information about how to request these credit freezes whenever a newborn or child receives a social security number or replacement card. The bill applies to credit reporting agencies and affects parents and guardians of children under 16, as well as newborns receiving their first social security numbers. The provision requiring Social Security Administration to include freeze information takes effect 12 months after the bill becomes law.
