The Health Workforce Innovation Act establishes a new federal grant program to train allied health professionals, such as medical assistants, dental hygienists, pharmacy technicians, and community health workers, in underserved and rural areas. Eligible recipients include federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics, and nonprofit vocational programs that can partner with schools and clinical settings to create innovative training models. The program supports education and training initiatives, apprenticeships, internships, and equipment purchases, with individual grants capped at $2.5 million and lasting at least three years. Priority will be given to projects that recruit workers from disadvantaged backgrounds and can be replicated across multiple underserved communities. Congress will appropriate whatever funds are necessary for the program from fiscal years 2025 through 2027.
