The Campus Accountability and Safety Act strengthens protections against sexual violence and harassment on college campuses by requiring institutions to establish new support systems and increase transparency about campus safety. The bill mandates that every college designate sexual and interpersonal violence specialists—trained counselors separate from disciplinary officials—to confidentially support survivors of sexual assault, harassment, stalking, and related crimes. Colleges must also publish detailed statistics about sexual misconduct cases, establish uniform disciplinary procedures, provide survivor accommodations like schedule changes, and create a federal website tracking campus safety data and Department of Education investigations. The legislation requires the Department of Education to develop trauma-informed training programs for college staff handling these cases and allows the federal government to impose penalties up to one percent of an institution's operating budget for non-compliance. Most requirements take effect within one to three years of enactment, and the Government Accountability Office must report on grant effectiveness within two years.
