The Kangaroo Protection Act of 2023 would prohibit the importation, sale, and distribution of kangaroos and kangaroo products in the United States for commercial purposes. The bill makes it illegal for any person to bring kangaroos into the country for sale, possess them with intent to sell, or engage in interstate commerce involving kangaroos or products made from them, including advertising and trading. Violators would face criminal penalties of up to $10,000 in fines, up to one year in prison, or both, with each violation counted separately. The Secretary of Commerce would be responsible for issuing regulations to implement the law in consultation with the Attorney General, Secretary of Agriculture, and other relevant agencies. The prohibition would take effect 180 days after the bill becomes law.
