# Student Food Security Act of 2024 The Student Food Security Act would expand food assistance to college students and establish new programs to address hunger and basic needs on campuses. The bill broadens eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by allowing most college students to qualify, while establishing a federal demonstration program that would allow students to use SNAP benefits to purchase prepared meals at campus dining facilities and food stores at up to 10 participating colleges. The legislation also requires the Department of Education to share data with other federal agencies to identify students who may qualify for various assistance programs including SNAP, housing assistance, Medicaid, and other benefits, and directs the Education Department to inform students about their potential eligibility for these programs. Additionally, the bill authorizes $1 billion in federal grants for fiscal years 2025 through 2031 to help colleges establish basic needs programs addressing food insecurity, housing insecurity, homelessness, and access to services like childcare and healthcare. Planning grants would provide up to $75,000 for colleges to assess student needs, while implementation grants would offer up to $1 million over five years to help institutions create permanent support infrastructure, with at least 25 percent of funding reserved for community colleges and minority-serving institutions.
