The Seizure Awareness and Preparedness Act creates a new federal grant program to help schools support students with epilepsy and seizure disorders. The Secretary of Education would award grants to states, which would then distribute subgrants to local school districts to fund training for school staff on seizure awareness, recognition, and emergency response. Schools receiving funding must ensure that school nurses coordinate seizure care, all staff receive training at least every two years, and school bus drivers are informed about students with seizure disorders and trained in seizure first aid. Local districts can also use funds to train staff in administering seizure medications, educate students about seizure awareness, and hire compliance staff to ensure program requirements are met. The bill authorizes $34.5 million in federal funding over five fiscal years from 2024 through 2028 to support this initiative.
