The Farmhouse-to-Workforce Housing Act of 2024 expands a federal housing preservation grant program to allow funds to be used for building accessory dwelling units (small secondary homes on single-family properties) in addition to traditional home repairs and rehabilitation. Under the bill, grants for accessory dwelling units cannot exceed $100,000 per unit and cannot cover more than half the construction costs, with that cap adjusted annually for inflation. Property owners using these grants must earn no more than 150 percent of the area median income, live in either the main house or accessory unit, and maintain ownership for at least five years. The legislation authorizes $200 million in funding for the expanded program and allows recipients to use up to 20 percent of grant funds for administrative costs related to the projects.
