This bill would make $1 billion available from the Treasury Department's Forfeiture Fund for grants to support school resource officers in classrooms. The funds would be distributed through the existing COPS program, which provides grants to local law enforcement agencies and school systems to establish partnerships. Of the total amount, $750 million would be specifically reserved for grantees that hire at least one military veteran as a school resource officer and commit to using the funds for school-based law enforcement partnerships. The remaining $250 million would be available more broadly for school resource officer programs. The funds would remain available for use until fully expended, with no specified deadline for distribution.
