This bill increases the Social Security lump sum death benefit, which is a one-time payment made to the families of deceased Social Security beneficiaries, from its current amount to $2,900 starting January 1, 2025. After 2025, the payment amount would automatically adjust each year to keep pace with inflation, based on changes in the Consumer Price Index. The bill affects the survivors and families of Social Security beneficiaries who die after the effective date. The legislation does not require any new federal funding since it modifies existing Social Security payments through the trust fund. The bill was introduced in September 2024 by Senators Peter Welch, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders.
