This bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to study whether a water project can be built to bring water from the Missouri River to western South Dakota's regional water system. The study will evaluate the feasibility of supplying municipal, rural, and industrial water needs through the Western Dakota Regional Water System, Inc., a nonprofit entity. The federal government will cover up to 50 percent of the feasibility study costs, with the bill authorizing $10 million in total spending for the project. The study must follow established federal reclamation standards and meet specific eligibility criteria, and the Secretary can enter into cooperative agreements with local water districts to ensure the study meets these standards. The authority to conduct this study expires 10 years after the bill becomes law.
