The Federal Data Center Enhancement Act of 2023 updates federal requirements for how government agencies manage their computer data centers. The bill extends an existing federal data center program through 2026 that has already consolidated over 6,000 data centers and saved $5.8 billion since 2010. Within 180 days of enactment, federal officials must establish new minimum standards for data centers that address cybersecurity, energy efficiency, uptime reliability, disaster protection, and resistance to power failures and physical intrusions. All federal agencies must comply with these standards for new data centers and incorporate them into existing facilities within 90 days, while also prioritizing cloud-based solutions over building custom data center infrastructure. The Government Accountability Office must audit agency compliance annually starting one year after the law takes effect, and a public website will track how well agencies are meeting these requirements.
