The PFAS Free Military Purchasing Act restricts the Department of Defense from buying products containing certain "forever chemicals" known as PFAS, which are linked to health and environmental concerns. Starting April 1, 2023, the military cannot purchase nonstick cookware, stain-resistant furniture, and carpets containing two specific chemicals: PFOS and PFOA. This restriction expands significantly on April 1, 2025, to ban a broader list of 13 PFAS chemicals in a wider range of items including food packaging, cleaning products, sunscreen, and clothing. The bill requires the Secretary of Defense to submit annual reports detailing efforts to identify and eliminate PFAS-containing products from military procurement, beginning within 270 days of the bill's enactment. Importantly, the law does not require the military to dispose of items already purchased before the effective dates, nor does it mandate testing of existing inventory.
