This bill adds radiologist assistants to Medicare coverage, allowing them to be paid for services they perform under a radiologist's supervision. Radiologist assistants are advanced-level radiographers who work as part of a radiologist-led team in diagnostic and interventional imaging, though they cannot independently interpret imaging exams. The legislation specifies that payment goes to the supervising radiologist at the same rate as other physician services, and applies to services provided in hospitals, critical access hospitals, and ambulatory surgical centers. The bill requires that radiologist assistants be certified by either the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the Certification Board for Radiology Practitioner Assistants, and that they be legally authorized to practice in their state. These changes take effect on January 1, 2025.
