The Open Payments Expansion Act would require pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to publicly disclose payments they make to patient advocacy organizations. Currently, manufacturers must report payments to healthcare providers and teaching hospitals, but patient advocacy groups are not included in these disclosure requirements. Under this bill, manufacturers would have to submit detailed reports to the federal government starting March 31, 2026, and every 90 days thereafter, listing the name of each patient advocacy organization that received money and the payment amount. The law covers both direct payments and indirect payments made through third parties. This transparency measure would allow patients, caregivers, and the public to see which advocacy organizations are funded by manufacturers, potentially revealing financial relationships that could influence the groups' positions on treatments and medical products.
