The Caring for Grieving Families Act of 2023 amends health insurance rules to protect families who experience miscarriage or stillbirth from unexpected medical bills. When a health plan covers prenatal care as part of a bundled payment for childbirth, and that pregnancy ends in miscarriage or stillbirth, insurance companies can no longer charge patients more for the prenatal services they received before the loss. Essentially, patients would pay the same amount they would have paid if the pregnancy had continued to term, rather than facing higher out-of-pocket costs because the bundled payment was never triggered. The law applies to both group health plans and individual health insurance coverage and takes effect for plan years beginning on or after January 1, 2025. The bill aims to ease the financial burden on grieving families during an already difficult time.
