To amend title 18, United States Code, to require a provider of a report to the CyberTipline related to online sexual exploitation of children to preserve the contents of such report for one year, and for other purposes.
This legislation extends the time that internet service providers must preserve evidence of child sexual exploitation reported to the CyberTipline, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's online tip line. Currently, providers are required to keep such reports for 90 days, but this bill would increase that requirement to one year. The bill also allows providers to voluntarily preserve this evidence for longer than one year if they choose to do so in order to help combat child exploitation online. The measure affects internet and technology companies that host user-generated content and receive reports of illegal activity involving children. The bill contains no specific federal funding authorization, relying instead on existing agency operations to implement the extended preservation requirement.
