To amend the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act to authorize the use of certain grants to prevent suicide or overdose by children, adolescents, and young adults, and for other purposes.
The Kid PROOF Act of 2023 expands an existing federal grant program to help prevent suicide and overdose deaths among children, adolescents, and young adults. The bill amends the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act to allow grant money to fund suicide prevention services alongside existing substance abuse treatment programs, and adds new eligible organizations to receive grants, including children's hospitals, pediatric clinics, child mental health specialists, and Indian Health Service programs. The legislation authorizes grants through fiscal year 2028 and requires that at least $2 million per year be dedicated to these prevention and treatment efforts. Eligible grant recipients can use funds to provide counseling to parents and guardians about overdose and suicide prevention, as well as supplies to prevent access to lethal means. The bill aims to address the growing crisis of youth suicide and overdose deaths by expanding access to evidence-based prevention and treatment services.
