To require the Director of the National Institutes of Health to evaluate the results and status of completed and ongoing research related to menopause, perimenopause, or mid-life women’s health, to conduct and support additional such research, and for other purposes.
The Menopause Research and Equity Act of 2023 directs the National Institutes of Health to evaluate current and completed research on menopause, perimenopause, and midlife women's health, and to identify gaps in knowledge about treatments and their safety. Within 180 days of the bill's enactment, the director must submit a report to Congress detailing findings and funding amounts spent on this research over the previous five years, along with a strategic plan to address identified research gaps. The bill also requires the NIH to conduct or support additional research on menopause-related causes, symptoms, and treatments, including a multidisciplinary study on hormone treatments for menopausal symptoms, involving gynecologists, oncologists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, and neuroscientists. The legislation affects millions of women experiencing menopause and has broad bipartisan support in the House. No new funding is authorized for the bill; instead, it must be carried out using existing NIH resources.
