This bill withdraws approximately 3,055 acres of land in the San Bernardino National Forest in California from future mining operations and mineral development. The withdrawal protects habitat for four threatened and endangered plant species by preventing mining claims, mineral leasing, and geothermal leasing on the affected federal and non-federal land within the forest. The protection aligns with the Forest Service's existing Carbonate Habitat Management Strategy, which aims to balance species conservation with the administration of mining activities on the forest. The withdrawal takes effect immediately upon enactment for the roughly 2,775 acres of federal land already owned by the government, while the approximately 280 acres of non-federal land would be protected once the United States acquires it. The bill was introduced by Representatives Jay Obernolte and Jim Aguilar in December 2023.
