The Transparent Automated Governance Act requires federal agencies to be clear and accountable when they use artificial intelligence and automated systems to make important decisions about people's lives. The law applies to critical decisions involving education, employment, benefits, healthcare, housing, credit, immigration, and other essential services that significantly affect individuals. Within nine months of the law taking effect, the Office of Management and Budget must create guidance requiring agencies to tell people when they are interacting with automated systems and when automated systems helped make decisions about them, plus establish a process for people to appeal or get a human review of those decisions. Federal agencies then have nine months to implement this guidance, and the Government Accountability Office will report to Congress every two years on how well agencies are complying. The law expires after ten years unless Congress reauthorizes it.
