This bill requires the military to include training on the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, or SCRA, in its financial literacy programs for active duty and reserve service members. SCRA provides important financial protections to military members, including limits on interest rates that creditors can charge on debts incurred before military service. The bill ensures that service members receive notification of these benefits when they first enter the military and again whenever reserve members are called to active duty for more than 30 days. Additionally, the legislation requires creditors to automatically apply interest rate caps to all service member debts, not just those specifically mentioned in notices, and mandates that creditors provide multiple ways for service members to submit required documents online, by mail, or by fax. By improving awareness and enforcement of these existing protections, the bill aims to help military families better understand and utilize the financial safeguards available to them during their service.
