Referred to the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill reauthorizes the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, known as HIDTA, which targets drug trafficking through coordinated federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts. The legislation provides $302 million annually from fiscal years 2024 through 2030 for the overall HIDTA program and creates an additional $14.2 million per year specifically for grants to support fentanyl seizure and interdiction activities. The bill also requires the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy to submit annual reports to Congress detailing how HIDTA funds are being used to combat fentanyl trafficking, including seizure amounts and trafficking patterns. Additionally, the Attorney General must identify at least 16 assistant U.S. attorneys available for temporary reassignment to prioritize investigating and prosecuting fentanyl trafficking organizations through 2030. The legislation affects federal agencies involved in drug enforcement as well as state and local law enforcement agencies that partner with HIDTAs to combat drug trafficking.
