The Protecting Homes from Trains Act of 2024 directs the Secretary of Transportation to establish a federal grant program that provides funding for constructing barriers along railroad lines adjacent to homes. These barriers would protect residential structures and neighborhoods from damage caused by train derailments, as well as reduce noise and vibration impacts from train operations. Eligible grant recipients include states, local governments, Amtrak, freight railroads, and rail carriers working in partnership with public entities. The bill authorizes $100 million per year in funding for the grant program from 2025 through 2029, and requires the Secretary of Transportation to establish the program within 180 days of the legislation's enactment.
