To amend the Public Health Service Act to authorize grants to support schools of nursing in increasing the number of nursing students and faculty and in program enhancement and infrastructure modernization, and for other purposes.
The Future Advancement of Academic Nursing Act authorizes the federal government to award grants to nursing schools to address the national shortage of nurses and nursing faculty. Schools can use these funds to hire and retain faculty, enroll more students particularly from underrepresented groups, modernize facilities and equipment including simulation labs and telehealth technology, and enhance educational programs. The bill prioritizes grants for schools serving medically underserved areas, rural regions, and health professional shortage areas, with an emphasis on recruiting and supporting disadvantaged students including minorities and first-generation college students. The legislation authorizes one billion dollars for this grant program with no expiration date on spending. Within five years, the Secretary of Health and Human Services must report to Congress on program outcomes, including the number of students enrolled and graduated, faculty hiring and diversity improvements, and the program's effectiveness in addressing nursing workforce shortages and pandemic preparedness.
