The Courage to Serve Act of 2024 establishes a pilot program allowing certain undocumented immigrants and those with temporary protected status to serve in the U.S. military and gain permanent residence as a result. Eligible participants must pass an FBI background check, be otherwise qualified for military enlistment, and be admissible to the United States, then can enlist and apply for permanent residency within 180 days of joining. Those who complete three years of honorable service, one year of active-duty service, or 30 days of service in a combat zone receive expedited processing of their residency applications. Participants are protected from deportation and detention while in the program and are not subject to the normal numerical caps on green cards. The bill directs the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense to establish the program within 180 days of enactment.
