The Accessibility and Inclusion to Diversify Local Government Leadership Act would establish a federal grant program to help small and rural local governments pay for workplace accommodations needed by elected or appointed officials with disabilities. The program, administered by the Department of Labor's Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy, would award grants between $3,000 and $50,000 annually to eligible local governments, with funding lasting through an official's first term plus two additional years. To qualify, local governments must be in rural areas, have populations under 10,000, or have populations between 10,000 and 200,000 with poverty rates of 18 percent or higher, and must match at least 25 percent of grant funds while maintaining a dedicated accommodation funding account for at least four years after the grant ends. Eligible accommodations include physical office modifications, specialized software, sign language interpreters, and assistive technology devices. The bill authorizes $5 million in funding for each fiscal year from 2025 through 2031, with the Secretary required to submit annual reports to Congress documenting program outcomes and demographics of officials served.
