An estimated 300,000 Ecuadorians currently in the U.S. would become eligible for this protection, which shields them from deportation and grants work authorization. To qualify, applicants must be Ecuadorian nationals who have been continuously present in the U.S. since the bill's enactment, must register with the Department of Homeland Security, and cannot have certain criminal convictions or other disqualifying factors. The bill designates the initial protection period as a minimum of 18 months, after which the Secretary of Homeland Security may choose to renew the status.
