This bill would grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Ecuadorian nationals, allowing them to legally remain and work in the United States for at least 18 months. The designation responds to Ecuador's severe humanitarian crisis, marked by an 800 percent increase in homicides between 2017 and 2023, widespread gang violence, prison riots, and assassination of political figures. An estimated 300,000 Ecuadorians currently in the U.S. would become eligible for this protection, which shields them from deportation and grants work authorization. To qualify, applicants must be Ecuadorian nationals who have been continuously present in the U.S. since the bill's enactment, must register with the Department of Homeland Security, and cannot have certain criminal convictions or other disqualifying factors. The bill designates the initial protection period as a minimum of 18 months, after which the Secretary of Homeland Security may choose to renew the status.
