Referred to the Committee on Natural Resources, and in addition to the Committee on Agriculture, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill would allow states that border Canada or Mexico to place temporary, movable structures on federal land near those borders without obtaining special permission, as long as they notify the federal government at least 45 days in advance. The structures could remain in place for up to one year and could be extended in 90-day increments if the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner determines that operational control of the border has not yet been achieved. The bill applies to federal lands managed by agencies including the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service. Border states would be able to take these actions without the normal special use authorization requirement that typically applies to activities on federal land. The legislation does not specify funding amounts or allocate new resources, instead removing bureaucratic barriers for border security activities on federally managed land.
