This bill amends federal disaster assistance law to align application deadlines for disaster unemployment benefits with the deadlines for other disaster housing and individual assistance programs. Currently, these deadlines operate on different schedules, which can confuse disaster victims applying for multiple types of aid. Under the legislation, people seeking unemployment assistance after a major disaster would have to apply by the same deadline as those seeking other federal disaster relief, making the process simpler and more coordinated. The President retains authority to accept late applications if someone has a valid reason for missing the deadline, as long as they apply before the overall assistance period ends. The changes apply only to disaster assistance funding appropriated after the bill becomes law.
