Referred to the Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce.
The Protecting Consumers from Deceptive AI Act requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish task forces within 90 days to develop technical standards and guidelines for identifying and labeling artificial intelligence-generated content, including images, videos, and audio. The legislation mandates that companies offering AI applications embed machine-readable disclosures in any audio or visual content they create or substantially modify, and prohibits the removal of these disclosures. Large online platforms—defined as those generating at least $50 million annually or with 25 million monthly active users—must clearly display this AI-origin information to users. The Federal Trade Commission will enforce these requirements through regulations to be completed within two years and has authority to treat violations as unfair or deceptive practices. The bill aims to protect consumers from deepfakes and AI-generated scams, prevent national security threats, and ensure voters have accurate information during elections.
